Foglia Fellowships in anti-tumor immunity research at the University of Chicago

Posted by: University of Chicago

Posted date: Dec-11-2009

Location: Chicago, IL

Candidates are invited to apply for one of three Foglia Fellow positions at the University of Chicago (http://www.uchicago.edu/). These competitive post-doctoral fellowships will provide up to three years of full support for recent PhD's or MD-PhD's with prior training in cancer biology, immunology or related fields to pursue independent research under the mentorship of Professors Ralph R. Weichselbaum (http://www.radonc.uchicago.edu/typea/fac_rweichse lbaum.html), Yang-Xin Fu (http://biomed.uchicago.edu/common/faculty/fu.html), Stephen J. Kron (http://mgcb.bsd.uchicago.edu/faculty/kron/index.html) and/or other scientific members of the Ludwig Center for Metastasis Research (http://www-uccrc.uchicago.edu/Ludwig/LudwigRevHomepag e.html).  These investigators are working together to target metastatic cancer by combining genotoxic therapy and immunoactivation.  The Foglia Family grant to Drs. Weichselbaum, Fu and Kron is aimed at discovering new routes to activating anti-tumor immunity as a cure for advanced cancer.

Foglia Fellows work with one or more Ludwig Center investigators on translational projects directed at understanding epigenetics of DNA damage repair, tumor cell and stromal responses to genotoxic stress, innate and adaptive immune function in the tumor microenvironment, gene therapy to target immune response, effects of immunosuppression on anti-tumor responses, and other topics.  Available experimental systems include biochemical, molecular, cellular and animal models and translational studies with human subjects.

Currently, Dr. Weichselbaum is searching for candidates with no more than two years of post-doctoral experience and strong records of accomplishment in cell biology, cancer or immunology.  This Foglia Fellow may pursue studies of DNA-damage induced inflammatory signaling as a determinant of response to therapy.  Other projects exploring origins of cancer radiation sensitivity and resistance in vivo are also appropriate.

Candidates should submit as a single PDF file, a complete curriculum vitae, full contact information for at least three references, a short description of their research experience, a statement of career goals, and reprints of all publications, to Mahmud Ghaemi at mghaemi(at)radonc.bsd.uchicago.edu.

The Foglia Fellowship is open to individuals of any nationality.  Members of groups underrepresented in science are encouraged to apply.  The University of Chicago is an equal opportunity employer.
